Membership FAQ

Do you welcome children?

We welcome all ages and abilities. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult. We do not currently have a children's section as such - if you would prefer that please try Wotton Hall Chess Club in Barnwood who have a dedicated children's section meeting earlier in the evening - their contact details are on the North Glos chess website. Some of our members also run a chess session for children at Charlton Kings Library on Fridays - please enquire there.

Is there parking?

Yes. There is free parking at the Victory Club on chess club evenings If the car park is full (which is rare), we have been kindly allowed to park in the Charles Russell Speechlys car park next door.

Is there a trial membership?

We won't ask you to join until you have been to a couple of sessions and are sure you want to be part of the club.

How much does it cost?

Our annual membership fee is £35. This pays for our rent, replacement equipment, trophies etc.

Concessions are available for juniors (U16) - £5; students - £10; unemployed - £27.

Joining the ECF - which is optional unless you want to play in league matches or other events - costs £21 for adults.

Can beginners join?

We welcome members of all skill levels, including beginners. Please be aware that we do not offer tuition or coaching. It would be worth learning the basics online first!

Is talking allowed?

Please respect competitive chess and maintain silence in the chess room while league matches are in progress. Dates of home fixtures are available on the Fixtures page. On club nights when there isn't a league fixture, we play more social chess and a reasonable level of conversation and analysis is expected.
